February 2008 Search Market Report Card. Did Google Slow Down?

Our friend Mark Mahaney, Internet Analyst at Citicorp, has issued a note parsing the latest search query data from comScore. He notes: Overall query growth decelerated, but Google gained market share, 70 bps to a “record-high 59.2 percent.” However, slower gains can be a harbinger of tough times. Google’s U.S. query growth of 26 percent marked a deceleration vs. 37 percent growth in January and 40 percent growth in Q4, Mahaney notes. On the flip side, Yahoo (down to 21.6 percent) and Microsoft (down to 9.6 percent) both lost market share, while Ask gained some, to about 4.6 percent.
