For DivX, Web Video Is No Go

DivX, the company that’s gotten its codec compatible with well over 100 million video devices around the world, hasn’t had similar success on the web. In fact, after deciding to spin off high-quality video destination site Stage6 to cut costs, DivX would rather be a service provider to video sites than actually get involved, CEO Kevin Hell tells NewTeeVee in this video interview.

DivX has been an important thought-leader and a pioneer in the video codec space. I’m a fan of their freeware Dr. DivX application for transcoding various other video formats into the .avi format. DivX has enabled many people to explore the raw potential of the online video space. Whatever they decide their future business model will be, I wish them well.
