Hawaiian Electric Co is running a broadband over power-line trial. About 100 Pearl City-area homes will receive free high-speed Internet access as part of the trial that will last 18 months. The company will basically let others like Verizon and Time Warner Cable offer services on this network, if successful.

When I lived in Hawaii 10+ years ago, there were huge problems with rolling blackouts. We’d have one maybe once a month or something. Hopefully that situation has improved since then.
